Wonderful Matters

"Apart from Me you can do nothing." These words are there quite prominently in the 15th chapter of John's gospel. Around them is an entire treatise about how much Jesus is it. He's the One. Nothing else matters. Have Him and you have everything and can do anything. Don't have Him and you're squat. No matter how much you're into anything  else, it is utterly, contemptibly worthless. I'd add that it is even worse if you are into another  Jesus. The harrowing thing about that is there are so many . It is just as viscerally sorrowful that so so very many believe that as long as someone says they believe in a Jesus then we can all gleefully consider being on the same page crusading for good wholesome things out there. I wanted to briefly add a few notes about my last blog post , the one about the latest Mary Poppins excursion  Mary Poppins Returns . If you look and want to see clearly you'll easily note that the film presents a powerful version of the reigning religion belonging to those captivated by that Harry Potter desire to heroically affect things by their will outside the bounds of any of the more mainstream religious considerations -- ugh, too constricting. I want to be able to make my own way and do it by the most ethereally imaginative means. I don't believe many know the origins of this religion, and I think most would be surprised it is most prominently diffused into the World through the ecclesiastical institution right around the corner from their homes. I've long felt that there is only one thing that has true intrinsic value. He is God. He is it -- in and of Himself, irrespective of anything else. The only intrinsically valued thing. Everything else has instrumental value, that is, anything else has value in the perspective of the one doing the valuing. There is one qualified exception to that, however, and it is an important one. It is that one thing that is instrumentally valued by God, and in a sense does have a certain amount of intrinsic value if we see that for what it is. That other thing? The human soul. If we see the human soul the way God does, we can see it too has a measure of intrinsic value. From that we can value lots of things in lots of ways. We can value things the way we  want to, but that leads to all kinds of evil. On September 24, 2015, the pope of the Roman Catholic Church spoke to the entire U.S. Congress in the House of Representatives chamber. He was received with ravishing applause, and as he spoke the then-Speaker of the House and top Republican leader John Boehner blubbered. The very day after this event Boehner not only resigned his Speaker position but left the Congress all together. This was portrayed as nothing but a minor political calculation, something similar to "I want to spend more time with my family", and was summarily dismissed as of no matter by just about everyone. I'm pretty sure I know why Boehner bolted, and while I'm pretty sure some could see this, I saw no one write or speak about it. You may want to catch Maureen Mullarkey's piece about the Catholicist Nation in The Federalist . You can learn a lot about truthful matters from a true-believer Catholicist. The first half of her piece is a scathing review of Catholic Church loathing throughout U.S. history. How evil has all that evil loathing been, let's make sure Catholic victimhood is firmly entrenched in the Americanist mentality. The second half is a lucid justification for such a perspective. Guh? The news streamers have had a field day with the battle royale between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and World System potentate Francis I. Trump has said he wants a wall to slow the excessive flow of immigrants coming into the U.S, while Francis says walls are not for Christians, presumably because Christians are supposed to be about being kind and welcoming and hospitable and all that. I mean, after all, he is  "Pontifex Maximus", he is Supreme Bridgebuilder. How magnanimous of him to say all that. Both have since scaled back their vitriol, Trump because he knows so many voters adore the Pope, Francis because it is unbecoming of the World's most celebrated pastoral-oriented individual. It's a new year and everyone seems to have renewed commitments to be better in some way. This year the most prominent System operatives continued to pound down the things you should do so they'll like you. In September Pope Francis told Congress, and by default all good Americanists, that they should not be too extreme about things. Avoid "extremism" he said, in so many words. Hmm. I wonder. Does he believe in that sentiment extremely ? Is he not an extremist in avoiding extremism? No, what the pope really means is "Don't believe in things we say you're not supposed to believe." Just feel like blogging a bit of eschatology here. I just feel like it. I'm not a date-predictor by any means. But among the very last words in the very last couples of verses of the Bible are "Come quickly Lord Jesus." What a wonderful matter that will be. Thing is, here's what I see right now. I see Russia and China both moving big-time on a thoroughly destabilized Syria. I seem to remember some Christians with some reasonable eschatological sentiments saying that Russia is the "Gog/Magog" of Ezekiel and China represents the "Kings of the East." Israel has a powerful army and terrific security unit, and they are now mobilizing big-time in response to this. Some eschatological minds have thunk that the reason the U.S. does not play a part in last days prophecy is because it just isn't there . With a completely arrogant, incompetent president and a stunningly spineless, impotent Congress I'm beginning to see some truth there. I seem...

I live in California where we are told if we water our lawns we're evil. Never mind that residential use makes up a piddle (puddle?) amount of the water used in the state. Sure we need most of that water for agricultural purposes -- we all eat. But I'm also great with reasonable conservation activity. On the corner of my street a homeowner with a perfectly beautiful front lawn decided to drink the Kool-Aid, however, and tear up that lawn and install other more "drought-friendly" landscaping. Why?  Even with incentive rebates (which are not a whole lot, let's face it, and I'm pretty sure that money dried up a while ago) I just can't see why so many people are buying into the overblown anti-drought message. Oh, wait, I know. People still live in the deepest guilt with the most crushing shame. Hey! How about becoming more drought-tolerant! That'll make me feel way better! Tonight we made a trip to Costco, snagged a few things we like you can get in bulk. We also picked up some videos we had made into DVDs. Some things I got to behold in the books and toys section. "Frozen" stuff seems to be everywhere, "Frozen" being that extraordinarily popular Disney/Pixar film about the gal who has power to make things very cold. Of course, the character Elsa is the one who decides to "let it go" in song, abandoning all pretense of decorum and ice-blasting everything around her. I've heard children sing this song to death, and it makes me very sad. Mark Levin is a popular conservative talk show screecher, and please, don't get me wrong, I like listening to some of his schtick, it is often smart and insightful. But Levin is still a small fragile toy in the hands of the Operative elite who twist his screws. My morning devotional time is now being spent reading the letters to the church in Corinth. I've always put forth those Scriptures as the text for my web ministry work , and getting into it again is just mind-blasting. Well, soul-blasting , really. It is phenomenal how much the Corinthian church mirrors the church today. Yesterday I heard a Christian-type dude on the Christian radio station say this,"2015 is the time for the church to start evangelizing the church ." After hearing this I just went  errgghnckrrrghnck  inside the depths of my psyche. That people have to say that and most Christianly people hearing that just about always think "Yupp, that's it, yupp we gotta get the church back to being Christian and all that." It is just so annoying because they've been saying this for eons and eons and eons. Sorry. 2015 won't be any different . Unless. With the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination about a week away, everyone's getting all kinds of conspiracy stuff splashed in their faces. With a bit of fascination about the events of November 22nd 1963, the other night I watched part of a television show that declared the second gunman was a Secret Service agent who accidentally shot the president from a vehicle traveling behind the president. Um, yeah. Right. The suggestion did have a lot of compelling things going for it, the smell of gunpowder all around, the very great likelihood a very poor marksman like Oswald simply could not have fired all three shots in such a short period of time, the persistent interference by Secret Service agents for virtually every moment of the post-assassination assessment of the forensic evidence, and others. But then, why did Kennedy's head still move backwards so dramatically with that final shot? It simply could not have come from behind but in front. And this agent shot h...

The splendid film Despicable Me has a scene featuring little girls at an amusement park who play a shooting gallery game in order to win a big stuffed animal. The object is to knock over a spaceship zipping side to side. One of the girls makes a direct hit on the target, theoretically with enough force to score the prize. Alas, the ship does not fall back to indicate a full "knocked over" achievement. After asking for the eagerly expected animal, the barker explains very smugly that the target had to be knocked over for the prize to be awarded. The adoptive father of the girl, the "Despicable Me" character named Gru who is an expert with nefariously utilized weaponry, steps back, pulls out some elaborate multi-barreled rocket launcher, and then utterly obliterates the entire shooting gallery.
